Welcome to George Stephenson High School
Another record-breaking year! Congratulations to all students on your outstanding results at both GCSE and A-Level
Congratulations to our Year 13 students for the best set of A-Level results (on every measure) that the school has ever had. Our pass rate at A-Level was 100% and 49% of our students achieved A* to B grades. An outstanding 13% of our students have achieved straight A* and A grades across the board – this figure is the highest of all the schools in North Tyneside. Our Average Points Score per entry is 217 (up from 207 last year), the 3rd best in North Tyneside and well above LA average and our Average Points Score per student is 732 (up from 610 last year), the 5th best in North Tyneside and again well above LA average. These are the best results the school has ever achieved and it is a testament to the hard work from our students and teaching staff. The vast majority of our students are now going to go on to their first or second choice university place and we would like to wish them every success in the future.
Congratulations also to our Year 11 students for matching the best ever set of GCSE results the school has ever seen. Our 5+A*-C pass rate was 81% (well above our challenging FFT D target of 66%; a target that, if achieved, would put us in the top 25% of schools nationally). Our 5+A*-C pass rate including English and Maths was 50% (again above our FFT D target of 46%). Our Capped Average Points Score (the best 8 results per student) was 332, our highest ever – up from 321 last year and well above our FFT D target of 310. An outstanding 21% of all grades were at A/A* and we had eight students with ten or more A’s or A*’s – our highest achiever being a boy with nine A*s and two A’s.
We are delighted with the GCSE results this year. The students have performed even better that we hoped they would. They have matched last year’s results, which were by far the best the school has had, so we are thrilled to have maintained this high level of achievement once more. We feel very strongly that, when the value-added measures are released, this set of results will be the best results the school has ever achieved. The majority of our students are joining us in the Sixth Form next year and we would like to wish them, and all the students leaving us, every success in the future.
The new academic year begins for all students on Tuesday 7th September 2010 at 8.40 a.m.

New School Uniform
The new school uniform is now available to purchase through Emblematic Ltd, who are located on the North Tyne Industrial Estate in Benton. They are able to offer you more flexibility in after-school and weekend opening hours and who also offer telephone and online ordering. Please note that uniform is no longer available to purchase from school. The overall cost of the uniform will work out to be cheaper for parents as it will allow you to buy plain white school shirts from anywhere and the only items of clothing specific to the school will be the compulsory school uniform listed above. As advised, we will be expecting all students new to the school to be wearing the new uniform from September 2010 and we hope most of our students will also be keen to wear the new uniform from September. There will however be a “changeover” period for the first term where students will still be allowed to wear the old uniform. We will therefore expect all students to be wearing the new uniform from January 2011.We have made an exception to this rule for current Year 10 students (who will be in Year 11 next year) and, although we would like as many as possible to wear the new uniform, we are prepared to allow them to continue to wear the old uniform until they leave at the end of the academic year.

I would like to take this opportunity to offer you a very warm welcome to George Stephenson High School.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as Headteacher of George Stephenson High School. The students, staff, parents and the wider community have made me very welcome indeed. Our school has a really positive ethos, with very strong pastoral and academic guidance and a real emphasis on learning in everything we do. I genuinely believe the support, care and welfare of our students is second to none. This school is and will always be a fully inclusive school which puts the students at the very centre of all that it does. We want it to be a school that is always a happy, safe and enjoyable place to be. Further to that we want the school to be at the very heart of the local community and to become the school of choice of all who live here. We are constantly striving to both improved our academic results and thus enhance the reputation of the school and I would be very keen to involve and work closely with all of our parents in this
As you will be aware over the last decade the school has improved significantly, building up a reputation as a lively, caring school and an exciting place for students to learn. Importantly, examination results at all key stages have improved significantly over the last few years.
Our students achieved the school’s best ever GCSE results in 2009 with 82% getting at least 5 Grade A*-C GCSEs, and 53% getting at least 5 GCSE Grade A*-C including English & Maths. The performance in the very important core subjects is most pleasing – 73% of our students passed English at A*-C, 59% passed Maths, 91% passed Core Science and 71% gained two Science passes (a figure that was only bettered by one other school in North Tyneside). Equally for students making at least expected progress in English we were also 2nd best in North Tyneside. The league tables for secondary schools also make very good reading indeed! In North Tyneside our CVA (Contextual Value Added) score of 1014.3 (which put us in the top 21% nationally) made us the fourth best school in North Tyneside and put us in the top ten of all the schools North of the Tyne. There were also very encouraging AS results with 51% of grades being A, B or C grades and the A2 results were excellent with 67% of grades being A, B, or C grades.
I hope you will take the opportunity to visit the school in the very near future and I look forward to meeting you soon.
Ian D Wilkinson
Headteacher

Open Evening 2010
I would like to inform you and your child of our Open Evening on Thursday 23rd September 2010. I would like to invite all students, parents, carers and members of the local community to visit the school to meet me, the staff and students to discover more about our school. The evening will run from 5.00 p.m. until 8.00 p.m. Please feel free to come at any time. There will be both a rolling programme of introductory talks from myself and the opportunity to visit displays, demonstrations and interactive activities across the whole school. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening, together with further information about the school.Trust Status
The Governing Body agreed at a meeting on Tuesday 20th July to acquire a Trust, and become part of a borough-wide North Tyneside Learning Trust. The alteration will change our school category from Community to Foundation with effect from 3rd September 2010. We genuinely feel this will support our approach to school improvement and will further benefit the lives and life chances of children, young people and their families with a focus on raising standards and improving wellbeing. I also wanted to let parents know that several of our Governors’ terms of office will end shortly and we will be writing to you with further details in September.
