Curriculum Intent

At George Stephenson High School, our Health Education curriculum is designed to empower students with the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attributes they need to lead happy, healthy, and safe lives both now and in the future. In line with our school’s core values of Respect, Community, and Ambition, we aim to provide an inclusive and comprehensive curriculum that fosters wellbeing in all aspects of life—mental, emotional, and physical.

Our curriculum is rooted in the statutory guidance for Health Education (2020) and aims to:

  • Promote respect for individual differences: Through our lessons, students will learn to value diversity and understand the importance of tolerance, empathy, and kindness. We encourage students to build strong, supportive relationships within the school community and beyond, creating an environment where everyone feels respected and valued.

  • Equip students with the skills to succeed: We strive to ensure that every student is given the opportunity to develop their full potential. Our curriculum encourages students to succeed in everything they do, helping them to become confident, responsible, and caring individuals who take pride in their personal and collective achievements.

  • Create a safe, supportive learning environment: Health Education at George Stephenson High School promotes an atmosphere of trust and respect. We ensure that all students feel safe and supported, offering a space where they can openly explore important health-related topics. This positive environment enables our students to confidently express themselves and learn effectively.

  • Provide practical learning opportunities: Our teaching methods are designed to engage students in active learning, encouraging them to practice what they know through varied and innovative approaches. By using a wide range of teaching strategies, we aim to deepen students' understanding of health topics and enable them to apply their knowledge in real-life situations.

  • Develop responsible citizenship: We focus on developing students into well-rounded individuals who understand the rights and responsibilities of being a British citizen. Students will learn about the importance of respecting others, combating prejudice and discrimination, and contributing positively to their communities.

  • Promote physical and mental health and wellbeing: The curriculum covers all aspects of health, from emotional wellbeing and mental health to physical health, including the importance of a balanced diet, exercise, and first aid. Our goal is to equip students with the tools to manage their health, make informed decisions, and adopt healthy lifestyles that will benefit them now and throughout their lives.

By aligning with our school mission, "We provide the best possible educational experience for all," our Health Education curriculum aims to cultivate responsible, resilient, and reflective young people who can confidently navigate the challenges of the present and the future.
