An introduction to
The Curriculum
Introduction to the Curriculum
At George Stephenson High School, the curriculum is at the heart of learning in our school. The subjects that form our broad and balanced academic curriculum use a knowledge-engaged approach where secure subject knowledge underpins and enables the application of skill. We ensure that both are explicitly developed through a carefully designed sequence of planned units.
We recognise that all our students have unique talents, skills and abilities and offer a personalised curriculum that allows everyone to experience success and build on their areas of strength whilst keeping future options open.
We want our students to leave school with the best possible grades, a passion for learning and a deep understanding of the subjects they have studied, how they are relevant to them and how they can continue to use the knowledge, skills and understanding they have acquired in their personal and professional life.
By developing a curriculum which promotes an aspirational high achievement culture, we plan to take account of individual needs and provide a wide range of enrichment opportunities. We aim to ensure we have well qualified, healthy, confident, inquisitive and ambitious independent learners who are fully prepared for the next stage in their lives, continue with their personal development and make a positive contribution to society.
Our Curriculum aims to:
-
Promote a positive attitude towards learning;
-
Provide a broad and balanced educational experience for all students which builds on their prior learning;
-
Enable students to develop knowledge, understand concepts and acquire transferable skills, and be able to choose and apply these in relevant situations;
-
Support students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development;
-
Support students’ physical, mental and emotional development and responsibility for their own health;
-
Ensure equal access to learning, with high expectations for every student and appropriate levels of challenge and support;
-
Provide subject choices that support students’ learning and progression, and enable them to work towards achieving their goals;
-
Promote British values and students’ responsibility as global citizens;
-
Develop students’ independent learning skills and resilience, to equip them for further/higher education, employment and life beyond school.
