Students will understand the underlying principles of the mathematics they learn, making links and developing reasoning and problem-solving skills. Students will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Students will progress towards being independent mathematicians who can identify correct and incorrect work for themselves. Where work is incorrect, students will be encouraged to use their mistakes to make further improvements and ultimately increase their resilience when faced with challenging topics. Building confidence in mathematics will be the key to all lessons and students will be challenged in order to maximise their potential. The Mathematics department will provide interesting and effective lessons, accurately diagnose weaknesses in all students and ensure appropriate interventions take place in order to ensure good progress for all students Home Learning Years 7-10 are set weekly home learning on Sparx Maths. This can be accessed here: www.sparxmaths.uk/student?s=georgestephensonhighschool Students can log in with their specific Sparx username and password or, alternatively, if they click "Sign in with Microsoft," they can log in using the username and password they use to access the IT system at school Home learning is set every Wednesday and due every Tuesday. It is personalised to each student and consists of tasks on recently studied work as well as some consolidation work based on prior learning. The more learning that students complete on Sparx Maths, the better the personalisation will become. We offer Sparx Club after school each Thursday in the library. Students can attend to complete home learning with support from Maths teachers. Students are welcome to stay to complete all of their home learning or simply drop in to get help with a small part of it. Year 11 home learning is more varied depending on the needs of the class and may be paper based or include Sparx Maths. However, all Year 11 students are encouraged to use Sparx Maths as part of their independent study and revision, as it is an excellent way to support and consolidate their classroom learning. Phone Mail 0191 216 1115 enquiries@gshs.org.uk @georgestephensonhigh Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Our key focus At George Stephenson High School, we understand that Careers Education has never been more important for our students. This is driving us to continually build on our current CEIAG provision to ensure that all students are informed about the options available to them both on a local and national level. Students also enjoy experiences from our external links and will gain a detailed knowledge of the offering provided by apprenticeships, technical routes, sixth form and further education colleges, universities and employment. Inspiring students to be passionate, confident and aspirational about their career choices, and equipping them with the skills, qualities and experiences needed for successful and happy futures. What we aim to offer We aim to offer a comprehensive careers programme which enables our students to gain an understanding of the vast array of careers options that may be suitable for them on a personal level. This begins with focus on high aspirations, in addition to building skills and confidence, and putting into place practical plans of how potential career paths can be achieved. Students also have the opportunity to talk to employers and receive guidance on a personal level around the selection of appropriate subject choices or career paths, with the aim of supporting their individual career plans. Monitoring of student progress throughout their time at school has never been more important to ensure that students are aware of new career opportunities and are on-track to achieve their desired goals. This often involves offering tailored opportunities based on the unique needs of students. Gatsby Benchmarks As a whole school, we are working towards achieving the Gatsby Benchmarks . These are the 8 foundations of good careers guidance and our aim is that they permeate teaching throughout the school. This includes supportive careers information from subject specialists, pastoral support and timetabled careers lessons. What makes us different? Supporting our students to achieve successful outcomes within their studied subjects is just one aspect of what we are trying to achieve. We recognise that all this effort and hard work is an enabling mechanism for students to fulfil their wider ambitions. This is where CEIAG sits at the heart of school life. We are so passionate about this that we provide our students with timetabled careers lessons in addition to the great work that is undertaken throughout the school. We are constantly improving our school CEIAG policy. - Media | GSHS
Phone Mail 0191 216 1115 enquiries@gshs.org.uk @georgestephensonhigh Information about Media Studies Staff members: Mr M Scott (MAS) Media Lead Mrs K Williams (KWI) Deputy Headteacher Mrs L Dunn (LDU) Assistant Headteacher Miss H Stephenson (HST) Teacher Mrs H Bell (HCB) Teacher Miss L Cook (LCO) Teacher Mr A Wallace (AGW) Teacher Mr L Atkinson (LAT) Teacher Curriculum Intent To provide a rich and challenging curriculum that will challenge learners' understanding and perception of the media technology that surrounds them and they use each day. Students are encouraged to critically engage with media products from a variety of different lenses to enhance their digital literacy and critical thinking skills. To develop analytical skills, which allows learners to understand the artifice of media texts and allows them to appreciate the elements of persuasion and manipulation embedded beneath the surface of media texts. This builds on the analysis model students are familiar with from their English studies and focuses on developing student confidence in applying academic vocabulary and developing academic expression. To provide practical opportunities for learners to develop digital skills which enable them to develop careers in media contexts. To develop and ignite a passion for the world of media around students locally, nationally and globally through the media curriculum. Students will study a wide variety of media platforms to arm them with the depth and breadth of knowledge of how the media functions as a collective. This will evolve through a range of representation and audience units. Within this there will be links to historical and contemporary issues that will enlighten how they see others and the digital world around them. Students will be encouraged to engage with how media products represent key aspects of our identity such as ethnicity, gender, age and socioeconomic groups. For learners to begin to develop an understanding of media theory. This body of knowledge will become increasingly complex and expand in breadth and detail. This will develop into varieties of viewpoints covering the same issues e.g. gender representation. As they progress in confidence, the expectation is for learners to apply a range of interpretations independently and to critically evaluate their validity. To provide opportunities for students to practice what they know through the creation of media products. By applying briefs, and researching existing professional practice, learners will be empowered with communication skills which reach beyond the confines of the media curriculum. To develop digital skills and an enlightened understanding of the digital world. This will empower learners to appreciate how their lives are affected by the media technology around them. In some cases, it will hopefully result in learners developing future careers in the media. Media Scheme of work GSCE Download A-Level Download
