Under 12 – George Stephenson vs. Churchill Community College
The boys started the new season in their superb new kit courtesy of the Team Sponsor Shasun. Shasun have kindly donated a set of strips for the boys and the first game of the season saw us travel down the A19 to Churchill.
The game started with a GSHS kick off and Jamie Clark almost scored inside 10 seconds forcing a great save from the Churchill goalkeeper. The pace was frenetic to begin with and the game swung from end to end with GSHS playing with a strong wind at their backs.
All the early play promised a great game ahead and after 12 minutes Dean Styler latched on to a ball in the left wing position and swung a boot at a pass from over 30 yards out catching the goalkeeper off his line and giving the boys an early lead. They held this lead for about 10 minutes before Churchill equalised with a high hopeful shot from a long way out caught keeper Niall Simpson off his line.
The boys struck back immediately and Lewis Allen chipped in with a great effort less than a minute later only for Churchill to equalise again after 22 minutes.
Heading towards the break Churchill scored a soft goal to sneak ahead and followed it up with another before halftime but the scoring continued and Michael Butcher scored the goal of the game to make it 3 – 4 at the break.
In the second half the boys were playing into the wind and battled very hard indeed and as a result there was no scoring in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Some excellent work by Dale Walker and Grant Hughes in midfield managed to stem the flow of the Churchill attacks and Olly Dunn, Alex Scott and fullbacks Luke Winship and Josh Foulkes were very impressive as the lads chased the game.
In the end there was a glut of goals in the last 10 minutes as the boys powered forward to try and find a goal and despite the score being 3 – 5 with five minutes to go, the match finished 3 – 8.
With a couple of key players missing there is a quick chance for the boys to make amends with a local derby against Seaton Burn on Wednesday 4th October.
