Evolve Wins Top Award..
On Thursday 2nd July, The Journal held its annual Schools Awards at the Centre for Life in Newcastle. This year Evolve was nominated in the ‘Best School Newspaper’ category. We were judged to be in the top three from all of the entries and invited to the event. We had got to this stage in the past and come in as runners up but this year we were hoping to do one better and win.
Alice Rutherford and Alex Stokoe (both Year 12) attended the event representing the Evolve team with Mrs Emmerson and Mr Hunter. We waited for our category to be called and then went up onstage to do our presentation giving the audience some information about why Evolve is so great.
We watched the other newspaper teams (Cedar Sports College and Thornaby Community School) present, getting more and more nervous on the side of the stage.
Brian Aitken, the editor of The Journal, was awarding the prizes. He said he had been impressed with the quality of all the newspapers but that the winner was Evolve! We collected our trophy, certificate and prize money from Mr Atkien and had our photograph taken for The Journal.
We were also interviewed by The Journal for a large feature to appear in Thursday 9th July’s edition and in The Evening Gazette. You can also see video coverage of the event at thejournallive.co.uk.
Other winners included Amberley Primary School in the ‘Sustainable School Award’ category for their whole school focus on responsible use of materials, recycling, energy saving and reducing climate change.
It was a fantastic event and even better as we came away in first place. Thank you to everyone who has helped make Evolve as brilliant as it is. Thanks to the prize money, our award winning magazine has a larger budget so watch this space for a bigger, better Evolve magazine in the future…
