Who are they?
Jordan David Thompson (aka Toma) was a teenager from Newcastle upon Tyne who was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukaemia (AML) on Valentine's Day of 2006 at the age of 13.
In the light of Jordan's many achievements, his family have set up the Toma Fund in his name. This charity will carry on what Jordan started - raising awareness and funds for the youngsters in Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust Hospitals.
Jordan once said, "I would never change what has happened to me, because I have met so many fabulous people, new friends, doctors and nurses and a lot of well-known stars!" Jordan's resolve and spirit will live on through the work of the Toma Fund as they continue their mission to improve the lives of children, teenagers and young people across the North East and Cumbria.
How does it work?
We value the close links we have with our local community and since 2007 we have adopted a whole school charity to fundraise for in the course of the academic year. Each year we set ourselves a challenging £10,000 target and since 2007 we have raised over £40,000.
This year we have decided to support the Toma Fund and we are aiming to beat the £11,477 we raised for The Bubble Foundation in 2010.
To see what we have achieved in previous years, take a look at our other appeals in the menu to your left.
How will we do it?
We have a non-uniform charity day at the end of each half term where students make a £1 contribution to come in their own clothes and on these days we have a range of activities designed to increase the total contributed to the school appeal.
In the Autumn term we have a whole school Game Show Night where students and parents can play game shows such as Deal or No Deal, Family Fortunes and others for real on stage with the chance to win excellent prizes including a PlayStation 3 and £150 cash. In the summer term we are planning a sponsored fun run for Years 7, 8 and 9.
Students are regularly encouraged to come up with their own ideas and any way to raise funds will be considered if it helps to increase the total. Past activities have included bake sales, car washes, garden equipment sales, raffles, football competitions and many, many more. This year we also had 16 members of staff participating in the Great North Run.
