The UK Memory Championships

The UK Memory Championships is the world's first memory training competition and has become a huge success in improving learning skills and confidence of young people.

Seven of our Year 9 students were fortunate enough to take part in this competition for the first time this year; Chris Hakin, Georgia Denton, Natalie Steele, Jessica George, Beth Robinson, Emily Macrae and Linzi Ellis.

The students have attended a memory training session at Newcastle University.  They have also received a brain training manual and have been shown how to develop and enhance their working memory and apply their newly acquired skills to their studies.

Our students have worked extremely hard so far, practicing and enhancing their skills during "˜Brain Club' before taking part in in-school competitions. The first round saw our students competing against many sixth form students from various Colleges in the North East in a very tough four-round challenge.

So far this year has been a huge success for George Stephenson High School with five out of our seven students making it through to the Regional Final.  Particular praise must go to Chris Hakin who was awarded a silver medal by remembering 108 words in sequence in fifteen minutes and Beth Robinson who was awarded the bronze medal for remembering a series of fictional dates.  Our five top scoring students will now compete in the North East Regional Final on 7th April,  with the most successful representing the North East at the National Final in July 2011.

I'm sure you'll join me in wishing them all the best for the next stage of the competition.
