Today George Stephenson High School hosted another Languages Roadshow, which has now become an annual event, designed to help raise Year 9 students' aspirations through language learning and develop their awareness and appreciation of Cultural diversity. In particular, they took part in activities to help raise their awareness of the importance of studying a Modern Foreign Language, and judging by the feedback given, the event was not only a success, but also greatly enjoyed.
Students enjoyed taking part in a carousel of activities including:
- A taster session of two new languages: Greek and Italian
- A cultural quiz
- An interactive session with Student Language Ambassadors from the University of Northumbria.
One thing that became very clear is how future prospects, whether to do with study, jobs or just getting to know new people of different nationalities, can be greatly enhanced by knowing other languages. Competence in a foreign language is seen as a great asset.
We are grateful to colleagues and students from the Languages Department at the University of Northumbria, who helped deliver the sessions.
Some feedback from our students:
I enjoyed all of it because I enjoy learning languages and about different cultures
I enjoyed learning Greek and learning about Spanish
I enjoyed the language tasters, especially Italian, I also liked the "languages are well different" session as it helped me understand more how languages can help me in the future.
I have enjoyed the entire event. The new languages were fantastic and the ambassadors were great...it was fun!
This event has opened my eyes to the world of languages that will open doors in my future life. I now realise just how important it is to have a second language.
I found out that not as many people speak English as I thought...
We discussed why knowledge of a foreign language is important in different areas of life - better job opportunities, money, social communication, and culture and travel- it was really interesting to hear the international language ambassadors from the university talk to us in their own language.
