George Stephenson High School Yearovision Song Contest

The very first George Stephenson High School Yearovision Song Contest was held on Wednesday 23rd March. The concept was that each year group would be represented by an act who would sing on behalf of their year group, and the acts would be judged on the night by the Guidance Managers and Achievement Support Coordinators from each year group. However they would not judge their own year group (in the same way as the countries in Eurovision do not mark their own act).

The acts representing their year group were as follows: Year 7 - Georgia Cox, Brooke Cowen, Lucy Wombwell and Sophie Bell who sang "The Climb". Year 8 - Peter and Richard Anderson who sang "Ghostbusters". Year 9 - Nathan Todd, Cathy Swann and Karleigh Charlton who sang "Billionaire". Year 10 - Matty Rayson, Hope Laverty, Sarah Balmer, Rebecca Mclean, Holly Moffat and Holly Green who sang "Forget You". Year 11 - Rebecca Ampleford who sang "Here Comes Goodbye". Year 12 - Kate Wood who sang "Someone like You". Year 13 - Taylor James who sang "Mercy on Me".

There was also "entertainment" from the staff who sang various Eurovision songs in between the student acts: The ITT Students led by Emma Close sang "Ooh Ah Just a little Bit". Sheila Hall ("Sheila La-Concierge") from the caretaking staff sang "Puppet on a String". Mrs Troup, Mrs Scrafton, Mrs Patrick, Mrs Barclay and Miss Rigby sang "Making Your Mind Up" going by the name of "C Blocks Fizz". Mrs Tidyman, Mrs Fuller, Miss Wilkinson, Mr Moat and Mr Campbell sang "Waterloo" as "Blabba".

The whole show was enhanced by the technological genius of Mr Sword. There was a big screen next to the stage and the acts were projected onto it as they were performing. The judges were then projected on screen from various parts of the world, including Sydney, London and Paris, to pronounce their verdicts and give their marks out of ten.

The winner was Taylor James from Year 13. Everyone in the 300 strong audience agreed that it was a fantastic evening.
