Generous George Stephenson High School!

Students at George Stephenson High School have really stepped up to the mark this Christmas with their efforts for the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal. The annual appeal involves giving a shoebox gift to a child in need and it is something the school has been actively promoting for several years.

Students in all year groups are invited to take part and their involvement ranges from providing small gift items to add to a box, donating the £2.50 required for postage, putting together gift boxes as a tutor group or filling an entire gift box individually. Students decide whether to give gifts to boys or girls and age the group, and then provide suitable gift items to include in their box. The gifts donated by generous George Stephenson High School students this year have included toys, jewellery, pens, pencils, colouring books, notepads, pencil cases, toiletries, hair brushes, sweets, gloves, scarves and hats - the list goes on! In addition to this, many items have been hand made, including sewing kits and toys.
Collections for Operation Christmas Child started in October, and the whole event is organised and coordinated by Sharon Johnston, the school's receptionist, who gives up a great deal of her time to do this. Under Sharon's direction, the whole school has taken part, with students and staff working together to produce as many boxes as possible.

On the 22nd November all of the boxes were collected together ready for transport to the Samaritan's Purse headquarters at Brough Park Trading Estate and the grand total was in excess of 60 boxes - an amazing achievement and testament to the generous and caring sprit of all at George Stephenson High School.
