On Thursday 8th December, a day of howling wind and lashing rain, eleven members of the GCSE RE group, accompanied by Mr Leece and student teacher Mr Wright, visited Newcastle's two cathedrals - St. Nicholas (Church of England) and St. Mary's (Roman Catholic) as well as the Brunswick Methodist Chapel near Fenwick's store.
Students were able to get a feel for the history of these buildings, the architecture and the role they have in the life of the city today.
At St. Nicholas' the civic role of the cathedral and its mid day prayer service were observed and Canon Richard Hill was photographed with Danielle Collins and Chris Hakin. At St. Mary's the group saw the church open for daily prayers and devotions and while no photography was appropriate at that time, good use was made of the Gift Shop. Mr Leece received a reply to a letter from Seamus Cunningham, the RC Bishop of Newcastle, much appreciative of the students' comments.
At the Brunswick Chapel students saw the real meaning of an inner city ministry to the homeless and deprived people living on the city streets. Deacon Eunice Attwood spoke to the group detailing the work done at Brunswick and a group photograph was taken to mark the occasion.
Despite the weather, most of the class appreciated the chance to observe a side of their city rarely seen on a shopping trip and to see some of the city's heritage.
