Last Week in Sport.....
5th – 9th July
GSHS held its annual sports day. The day had a mixture of athletic events as well as multi skills events. Every pupil in the school was involved in the day at some point.
Britain’s got talent contestant Sonny (from dance group Bionic Funk) came to GSHS to do a dance session with a group of Y9 pupils.
28th – 2nd July
A number of Y8/9 sports leaders assisted at Holystone sports in on Monday morning.
4 year 9 pupils attended the Sports Link Conference in Gateshead. The pupils who attended were all pupils who had shown a talent for leadership. They were Matty Rayson, Holly Green, Hope Laverty and Jordan Wall.
Backworth Primary held their sports day. They were assisted by a number of Y7/8 leaders.
The Y9 cricket team won the North Tyneside cricket festival. They performed extremely well at the event by winning all their games. Well done to the team.
The National week of sport took place. In PE lessons pupils in Y7, 8 and 9 were taught by sports coaches in a range of activities including archery, golf, boxercise and street dance.
21st – 25th June
The Y6 induction day was held at GSHS. In the afternoon a sports day was held. A number of Y8 sports leaders helped out at the event.
14th – 18th June
The Y6, 7 and 8 North Tyneside athletics championship took place on Monday. A number of pupils from GSHS and its feeder primary schools competed at the event.
Moor Edge Y5/6 pupils spent an afternoon at GSHS doing some orienteering activities with some Y8/9 GSHS sports leaders. This was designed to give pupils a better understanding of GSHS.
A Y5 badminton festival was held at the Lakeside for our Primary Schools. The event was well attended with Backworth winning the festival.
A Y5/6 rounders festival was also held. Over 150 pupils from our feeder schools attended. The final was played between Bailey Green and Holystone, in which Holystone won overall. They will progress to the North Tyneside final in a few weeks.
7th – 11th June
A number of Y8 sports leaders assisted at the Y4 skipping festival at The Lakeside.
A Y5/6 cricket festival was held at Backworth cricket club with over 100 pupils competing.
A number of pupils competed at the county athletics championship. They were Shaun Elliott (100m), Lewis Landells (100m), James Job (high Jump) and Neil Robinson (high Jump)
24th – 28th May
A number of Y9 and 10 pupils competed at the north Tyneside athletics championship at Monkton. Several pupils finished in the top 3 in their event and go onto represent North Tyneside at the county championship in a couple of weeks.
At the North Tyneside Football presentation night the Y10 boys got presented with their league cup trophy that they won this season. The Under 14 boys also got presented with the league cup trophy that they won. The north Tyneside boys who represented the association team this season were also presented with a certificate. They were Mark Waters, Jonathan Forster, Marc Dixon, Alex Whitmore, Steven Whitmore, Joe Carrick and Ben Ruffles.
Westmoor Primary School held its sports day on Friday. 12 Y9 sports leaders helped out at the afternoon.
17th – 21st May
A number of Y7/8 pupils competed in the Longbenton and district athletics competition at GHS. Over 30 pupils from the school competed against Seaton Burn and Longbenton pupils. They competed in events like 100m, 200m, high jump, long jump etc.

The Y7/8 cricket team played in a festival at Tynemouth cricket team teams. They boys did really well, winning their group and finishing 3rd overall.
The Y9 cricket team played against Newcastle School for Boys. The boys ran out convincing winners with Mark Waters scoring the majority of the runs.
4th – 8th May
A number of Y8/9 pupils took part in the Kielder challenge at Plessy Woods. The team took part in a number of physical challenges that required team work. They were awarded points for how well they worked as a team.



26th April – 30th April
The Y9 football team won the U14 league cup on Tuesday night. They beat Burnside 3 – 2. This is the 3rd year in a row the team has picked up the trophy. Goals from Alex Middleton (2) and Alex Whitmore sealed the win for GSHS.
On the same night the Y10 team played Seaton Burn in the final of the U15 league cup. They were unlucky to lose 2-0. Jon Coull saved a penalty for GSHS and in the second half Michael Butcher scored only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.
A number of Primary Schools came to GSHS to do some orienteering activities with Y8/9 pupils. Pupils from Bailey Green, Backworth and Westmoor attended a ½ day session each. The afternoons were designed to improve map reading skills as well as help the Y6 pupils get to know their way round GSHS.

20th April – 23rd April
The Y7 football team lost 2-0 to Marden in the semi final of the league cup. In an exciting game with lots of chances the game could have gone either way but Marden were the stronger on the day.
The Y8/9 cricket team beat Newcastle School for boys in a friendly match at South Northumberland cricket ground. The boys ran out easy winners with Mark Waters having the highest score.
28th – 1st April
The Y9 football team lost 2-1 to Bedlington in the semi finals of the county cup. In a very close game GSHS will feel they had enough chances to win the match but it was not to be on this occasion.
22nd- 25th March 2010
The Y7 cheerleading team took part in the regional cheerleading finals this week.
The Y7 football team got knocked out of the county cup in the quarter finals against East Gosforth. This was their first defeat all season.
The Year 9 football team lost 4-3 to Burnside in a thrilling game. GSHS went 4 – 0 down but fought back bravely to finish strongly. If there were a few more minutes on the clock they could have snatched a draw.
The Y8 cricketers played in the Lady Tavern festival at The Powerleague. The girls had a fantastic day winning most of their games.
A badminton team was selected to play in the CVL badminton competition at Longbenton. The girls team consisted of mainly Y7 girls who played in the Y10 competition. The girls found the going tough but played some excellent badminton. The boys were in Y9 and again played against Y10’s. The lads also did very well by winning several of their matches.
15th – 19th March 2010
A number of Year 9 pupils took part in the North Tyneside Dance festival at Whitley Bay Playhouse. Pupils performed their routine in front of a full house
A Y8 mixed hockey team played Seaton burn in a friendly match indoors. The team thoroughly enjoyed the game, despite not having played much hockey before. They were not able to win the game but performed very well never the less.
A group of Y9 girls played in the North Tyneside Indoor Cricket festival. They had previously working on their cricketing skills with development coach Dan Sherben. This was a chance to put their skills up against other teams from the area. After some very good performances the team lost 2 and won one game.
The Y10 girls football team played in a football festival in Gateshead. The team did extremely well by finishing in second place.
8th – 12th March 2010
The Y9 football team progressed through to the final of the North Tyneside league cup by beating Monkseaton 6-0. Goals from James Job, Alex Whitmore, Marc Dixon, Steven Whitmore, Mark Waters, Chris Hunter
The Y10/11 rugby team lost to a very experienced South Shields team.
The Y9 cheerleading squad took part in the North Tyneside Cheerleading festival at Burnside. The girls won their section to qualify for the regional finals.
The Y7 girls football team played in a triangular festival against Longbenton and Seaton Burn. The Seaton Burn team proved too strong for the girls but GSHS managed to overcome Seaton Burn.
1st March – 5th March 2010
The Year 9 boys football team progressed through to the semi finals of the County Cup by beating Heaton Manor 3-1. Goals from Alex Middleton, Marc Dixon and Alex Whitmore sealed the game.
The Y10 boys football team drew with John Spence 3-3. Goals from Alyx Scott and Josh Stocks (2) helped seal a point.
The Y8 badminton team played in the North Tyneside badminton festival at Marden Bridge. The boys did well in their group and were unlucky not to qualify for the final. The team was Callum Ruddick, Daniel Burn, Curtis Hardy, Allyn Layton and Connor Wilson.
The Y6/7 Judo club began on Tuesday with pupils from GSHS, Amberley and Westmoor attending. The club will run for 10 weeks. A professional Judo coach runs the club. Afterwards everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot.

The Y8 volleyball team played in the North Tyneside volleyball festival at Marden Bridge Middle School. The team was Abbi Lynch, Beth Campbell, Amy Evan and Hannah Robinson.
8th February – 12th February 2010
The Y7 boys football team beat Saint Thomas More 5-2 in the league cup. This now moves the boys into the semi finals and they maintain their unbeaten record this season. Next Friday they have a big game against Hexham in the county cup.
After ½ term there are 3 new sports clubs starting at George Stephenson high School. Judo will be starting for Y7 boys and girls on Tuesday 2nd March from 3.45-4.45 (see Mr Bell for details). The club will be run by a Judo professional. A Key Stage 3 girls cricket club will begin on Wednesday 3rd March in gym 2 (3.10-4.10). This will be run by Daniel Sherben, the North Tyneside Cricket Development Coach. Finally, a community fencing club will begin at GSHS on 10th March from 6-8pm. See any of the PE dept for more details. On Friday the Rugby League Challenge cup came to George Stephenson. The prestigious trophy was placed in the dining hall at break time. Some pupils (and staff) even had the opportunity to lift the trophy and have their pictures taken with it.

A group of Y8/9 students played in a badminton friendly match against monkseaton High School. The boys won their match comfortably, whereas the girls narrowly lost there match – Well done to them all

A group of Y8 pupils played in a friendly volleyball match against Marden Middle School. This was the first experience of playing volleyball for many of the pupils. They all enjoyed the fixture.
The Y7 football team will play Saint Thomas Moore in a league cup match on Friday afternoon. We will have the result in next week’s bulletin.
25th – 29th January 2010
The Y10 football team beat Burnside 3–0 away from home. The boys are still unbeaten so far this season.
The Y6 Hockey Festival was held for local Primary schools at The Parks. Amberley, Holystone and Westmoor all competed against each other. Westmoor eventually won the festival. This means they qualify for the North Tyneside Hockey Final on 10th February.
18th – 22nd January 2010
James Job (Y9) and Liam Redhead competed for North Tyneside in the County Cross Country Championships in Blyth. Both boys qualified from the North Tyneside championships in December 28 pupils went to John Spence to compete in the second North Tyneside indoor rowing competition. Teams were entered for the Y7 boys and girls, Y8 boys and girls and Y9 boys and girls. All teams competed very well and enjoyed the afternoon. A mention goes to the Y9 boy’s team who also entered the Y10 boys race and finished second. More information on this competition can be found in the other sporting activates section of the website.

The Y9 and Y10 girls played in the North Tyneside football festival at The Powerleague, North Shields. Both teams did extremely well with the girls winning 2 of their 3 games. The boys won 3 of their 5 games.
The Y7 rugby league team played in a festival at Benfield School on Monday. Despite playing against teams that were physically bigger and stronger than them the boys were more than a match for most of the teams, finishing second. Well done to them all. The squad was Harry Forster, Korey O’Neill, Jack Billings, Joe Mehaffey, Daryl Ridley, Bailey Williamson, Aaron Celino, Lewis Bowman, Alex Miller, Elliott Dorrington, Adam Illingworth, Liam Byers, Lewis Walker.
7th – 11th December 2009
The Y7 boys entered two teams into the North Tyneside schools football Competition at Powerleague, North Shields. Both teams did well. One of the teams finished second in their groups, whereas the other team finished 4th.
The Y9 badminton team played on Wednesday. A squad of 16 players went to Monkseaton High School. They put up a great fight but lost 3-1 in the end. However, they did play against Y10’s.
The Y7 girls football team played against Longbenton. The squad was Sarah Appleby, Letia Duffy, Millie McKeen, Shannon Williamson and Sophie Gegan.
The Y10 girls football team played in a 5 aside football competition at The Powerleague, North Shields. The team lost 3 games, drew one and won one. The squad was Kate Jackson, Sophie Cooper, Stacie Cooper, Danielle hogg, Denielle Hedley, Trinity Ruhl Young, Laura Powell and Chloe Carrot.
A group of Y7 boys played in a rugby festival at Bullockstead’s. This was the first competition for the boys. Although they competed very well they were not able register a victory. The squad was Harry Forster, Korey O’Neill, Jack Billings, Joe Mehaffey, Daryl Ridley, Bailey Williamson, Aaron Celino, Lewis Bowman, Alex Miller, Elliott Dorrington, Adam Illingworth, Liam Byers, Lewis Walker.
The Y7 netball team played Longbenton in a friendly. The girls played very well but were eventually beaten. This was an improved performance.

30th November – 4th December 2009
A total of 31 students went to compete in the North Tyneside cross country Championship at Churchill playing fields on Tuesday. Despite the cold James Job (Y9) and Liam Redhead (Y10) finished in the top 16 of their race to qualify for the next round. The will now represent the North Tyneside at the county championship in January. Congratulations go to all runners for their fantastic efforts on the day!!!

The Y8 football festival took place on Friday. A boys and girls team entered the festival. The festival was designed to give those students who don’t normally play football in school a chance to show their skills. The boys team finished 3rd, whereas the girls team won the festival outright!!! Well done to them all particularly the girls! The Y7 girls netball team played another fixture against Seaton Burn. Although the team improved with their performance the score still went against them.

The Y8 boys inter form football still continues every Friday lunchtime. At present 8RM have opened up a bit of a gap at the top of the table. 8 KDC are in second.
The Y8 girls inter form competition is also underway. We will give you an update on the scores for this very soon.
23rd – 27th November 2009
The Y10 rugby team played in a tournament at Bullocksteads on Monday. The 10 a side festival was very successful for the boys as they finished second in their group.
North Tyneside U14 district boy’s team beat Newcastle 2-1 on Tuesday night. GSHS had 4 representatives in the squad. They were Alex and Steven Whitmore, Marc Dixon and Mark Waters.
The Y7 inter form girls football competition started at lunchtime on Tuesday. The competition will run over a series of lunchtimes until an eventual winning form class emerges.
A group of cheerleaders had been working hard for the last couple of months to prepare for the North Tyneside festival. However, sadly on the day the event got cancelled as not enough local schools entered the festival!!!! The girls were extremely disappointed but will get their chance to do the routine in front of other people at another time. The PE department would like to say well done to all the girls for their hard work and effort they put into their cheerleading.

16th – 20th November 2009
A Y7 boys and girls football team competed in the North Tyneside 5 aside festival at The Power League, North Shields. The boys won two and drew one of their 8 games. The girls won one of their 3 games.

The Y7 netball team played a friendly against Marden Bridge Middle School on Thursday. In the end the more experience Marden player’s proved too strong for the GSHS girls. You can see the netball squad below.

9th – 13th November 2009
GSHS entered the KS 3 and 4 badminton festival at Churchill. Boys and girls teams both competed in the competition. After his impressive display in the afternoon Philip Welsh was asked to train with the Northumberland County Squad.
The Y9 football team progressed to the 2nd round of the county cup by beating Prudhoe 4–0.
On Saturday a number of KS 3 pupils went to Sunderland to compete in the district trampolining competition.
4 Y9 boys played for North Tyneside (football) against national champions Gateshead. The Tyneside lads lost 2-1 but were the better team for much of the match. The GSHS representatives were Alex Whitmore, Steven Whitmore and Jonathan Forster. Mark Waters also made his debut in that game.

2nd - 6th November 2009
The Year 9 football team continued their unbeaten run to the season with victories in the league over Monkseaton (5-0) and Norham (4-0).
The Y8/9 rugby team beat Seaton Burn 46 – 0 in a comfortable friendly match on Friday.
The Y8/9 rugby team lost 24-12 to a very good Newcastle school for boys team in a thoroughly entertaining game.
The Y8 football team lost 6-1 to Churchill in their league match.
GSHS signed up for the Chance to Shine Programme (Cricket). This will allow the school to access cricket coaching from Daniel Sherben, the cricket development officer. GSHS will now have the opportunity to do more cricket in the PE curriculum as well as after school clubs. A club will start after school for Y7 pupils (boys and girls) in January.
The Y8 inter football started this week and will be held every Friday lunchtime for the next few weeks.
