EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS

We expect the students at GSHS to behave consistently in the following way.

Staff do all that they can to support such good behaviour:

- attend school regularly and on time

- bring a bag containing all the books and equipment needed for the day

- wear correct school uniform

- work hard in lessons and do homework as well as possible

- be polite and helpful to others

- keep the school pleasant and tidy, free from litter and graffiti

- behave in a way which allows others to learn

- obey the reasonable instructions of school staff

When there is a problem with a student’s behaviour, the school has a clear staged approach to help him or her to put things right.

The school operates a zero-tolerance approach to bullying. Bullying, of any sort, will not be tolerated in school.

Our school is a No Smoking site.

Good work and behaviour are encouraged by:

- positive comments from staff

- written comments on work

- merit marks and credits

- letters home to parents

- regular celebrations of all achievements

 - display of students work

When things go wrong the following sanctions may be used:

- a firm word from a member of staff

- additional written tasks

- detention (at break, lunchtime or after school). If students are to be detained for longer than 5/10 minutes after school parents will be given 24 hours notice.

- isolation from peers

- being put ‘on report’ which entails monitoring of work/behaviour during each lesson of the day

- spending one or more days in an Internal Exclusion room, isolated from their classmates

- being withdrawn from a lesson to allow others to learn

We will not hesitate to contact parents when a student’s behaviour gives cause for concern. Serious misbehaviour may result in a longer period of time in an internal Exclusion room or temporary exclusion from school for a few days (up to 45 days in any school year) or permanently.

Signing In and Out of School

It is expected that, whenever possible, students will make any medical/dental appointments outside of school hours. If students have to leave school during the day for any reason then please send a note in advance of the date concerned.

Before going off site students must sign out at the School Office as they will receive an LEA authorised ‘out of school’ slip. If they return to school later on the same day then they must sign in again, and return the LEA slip. Copies of the slips are held in the School Office.

Under no circumstances should your child leave the school and go home without permission of the Guidance Manager and signing out. In the event of illness or injury they will be taken care of until a parent or guardian can be contacted.

Breaks

During break students are expected to remain in school. They may go out into the school grounds but are not allowed to leave the school premises without an official pass from the school office.

At lunchtime we would like students in Years 7, 8 and 9 to remain on site. Older students may leave the site with the permission of their parents. Parents who give such permission must take full responsibility for their child during that time.
