George Stephenson High School Year 9 Inspiring Science; Inspiring Scientists Trip to St James.

On the 28th of January 30 G&T students from Year 9 went on an inspiring day out at St James. After an interesting introduction speech from Johnny Ball to the eight gathered schools, we divided in to two groups of 15.
The group I was with firstly made all different types of neurons out of Play-doh with the Dr Jenny Read from Newcastle University and then learned all about the ways they link together in the brain.
Next we went on to learn about the forensics of fibres in clothes and we each got to analyse our own footprints with the Teesside University.
Then it was on to study Aero Dynamics with Ken Christie where, under supervision, all the pupils made their own paper aeroplanes. After a nice packed lunch, we went on to extracted DNA from kiwis with the Centre for Life. Then it was on to one of everyone's favourites - stadium building with Tom Mulholland. We were not only told the forces that are involved in how the stadium stays up at St James but got to make a whole GSHS stand. All of the presenters through out the day complimented the good behaviour of the George Stephenson pupils: well done.
To close the fun informative day, there was a talk from the TV presenter Liz Bonnin who told us all about her studies into tiger scat to work out what their diets are.
