Why choose us?

Why choose us?

  • Our school has a happy and purposeful atmosphere and we believe that the learning environment we provide allows students to grow and develop academically, socially and personally into responsible, caring and confident young people.
  • We have strong pastoral and academic guidance and a real emphasis on learning in everything we do. We believe the support, care and welfare of our students is second to none and we are a school which puts the students at the very centre of all that it does.
  • We were judged to be Outstanding in every aspect by OFSTED in May 2012. 'George Stephenson is an outstanding school where students' attainment has risen rapidly to well above average levels in response to the vision and drive of a highly committed and enthusiastic headteacher and his staff.' (Ofsted, May 2012)
  • "Achievement is outstanding because students make excellent progress as they move through the school." (Ofsted, May 2012)
  • For the last five years now over 62% of our students have achieved 5 or more A*-C GCSEs including English and Maths. These results have been particularly pleasing in the light of the changes to the examination system and the widespread volatility nationally and locally in the GCSE results over the last few years. Over the same five year period 73% of our students have achieved an A*-C in English and 72% have achieved an A*-C in Maths, both figures being well above national average every year.
  • Our Year 13 students achieved another great set of A Level results in 2015. The pass rate at A Level was 99% with 48% of all grades at A* to B and 72% of all grades at A*-C. All of our Year 13 students were once again successful in applying to University with the vast majority taking up their first or second choice University place and we would like to wish them every success in the future.
  • Outstanding teaching. "Students benefit from the exceptionally productive climate for learning that pervades the school and excellent teaching that enables them to make rapid progress." (Ofsted, May 2012)
  • "Behaviour is outstanding. Students respond exceptionally well to the adults who work with them and they trust them." (Ofsted, May 2012)
  • Excellent range of extra-curricular activities, events and visits.
  • Recent major investment in classrooms and social areas providing an excellent learning environment in a modern, fully refurbished building.
  • "The school provides students with an exceptionally safe and supportive environment for their education. Students say that they enjoy their education and recognise the quality of lessons they receive and the effort that members of staff put into them." (Ofsted, May 2012)
  • Strong values of friendship and responsibility - our students have raised over £60,000 over the last five years for local charities.
  • Very close partnerships with parents.
  • Specialist Humanities school, focussing on English, History and Geography.
  • Excellent range of extra- curricular activities, events and visits. Students have regular use of the Lakeside Sports Centre during and after the school day.
