Routes into Languages Roadshow 2010

Webfrench1

On Thursday 14th January 2010 George Stephenson High School hosted yet another Languages Roadshow, which is becoming an annual event, designed to help raise students’ aspirations through language learning and develop their awareness and appreciation of Cultural diversity.

Year 9 students from George Stephenson and Seaton Burn enjoyed taking part in a carousel of activities including:

·         A taster session of two new languages:  Japanese and Italian

·         A cultural quiz  involving online research and

·         An interactive session with Student Language Ambassadors from the University of Northumbria.

We are grateful to staff and students from the Languages Department at the University of Northumbria, who delivered the sessions.

Routes into Languages – gets the thumbs up

Comments made by some of the students.....

"I really enjoyed today’s language event, especially the language taster of Italian. In the future I would like to learn Italian and also Russian as I find both countries interesting. I feel that French at school should be accompanied by other languages."

"I enjoyed learning different languages that I probably would not have had the chance to learn. I would like to take part in something like this again if the opportunity came up. I thoroughly enjoyed today."

"The language road show made me realise how many languages there are in the world and how fascinating they all are. I saw some similarities and differences between the languages. It also changed my view on the difficulty of learning a new language at GCSE. I most enjoyed learning Italian. I realised although I do not need to, learning a language could help me throughout my life for CV’s, Job Opportunities, social skills while abroad or even just to help me watch a foreign film. Overall I really enjoyed the whole experience and it has made me think twice about the path I will take in the future!"

"Apart from the language tasters, especially Italian, I would really enjoy it if we had the chance to learn other languages too, I also liked the “languages are well different” session as it helped me understand more how languages help me in the future."
