Duke of Edinburgh @ GSHS

A group of 15 students took part in an introductory expedition the last week of term, as they prepared to work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award after the summer holidays.

Miss Heron devised a challenging route around the local countryside and the students took turns in reading the map and navigating their way towards the various checkpoints. Our route took us past Holystone, Holywell, Backworth, and along waggonways, through fields, under railway lines and eventually back to Killingworth.

The sun even came out in time for lunch.

As with all expeditions of this type there were hazards and obstacles to overcome. Some of the local wildlife was very keen to say hello but luckily Miss Heron's horse whispering skills allowed the group to continue without incident. Mr Jarvie is keen to point out that he was not running away from the horses but was merely checking if the gate at the other end of the field was unlocked.

Throughout the whole trip the students were extremely positive and focused, displaying very good navigation skills, and closely following all safety expectations.

A big well done to all the students who participated - more activities will be organised after the summer
