Child Development

This is a well resourced Department which consists of three practical Food Technology rooms and two classrooms which are used for teaching Health and Social Care, Child Development and Health Education. There is also a Curriculum Office and a Technician Store/ Office.

 

The department is supported by a full time technician.

Food Technology is taught at Key Stage 3 to all students and Food and Nutrition and Child Development are offered as options at Key Stage 4.

 

Health Education is taught at key stage 4 to all students. The programme works closely with outside agencies and has been responsible for the school achieving the Healthy School Award on eight occasions. A colleague within the department has responsibility for the management of the course.

 

GSHS is a lead school in Health and Social Care, working in collaboration with Seaton Burn College and Long Benton College. At present the Department offers a BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care and also Applied GCE Health and Social care as both a single and a double award. Both courses have work experience as an integral part.

 

The department is part of the Northumbria University DT SCITT partnership and takes an active role in the training of Trainee Teachers.

 

GCSE Child Development

Child Development is a GCSE option subject for Key Stage 4 students.  The written examination is 50% of the final GCSE grade with the remainder consisting of a coursework portfolio based on a child study.

The course itself is concerned with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to form relevant and informed opinions about the birth and subsequent development of a child.

Students will study and develop competencies in comprehension, analysis and interpretation of information. They will also be provided with opportunities to investigate, organise, communicate and evaluate, using appropriate problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Pre-conceptual Care;
  • Pregnancy;
  • Preparations for the Birth and the Birth;
  • New-born Baby;
  • Post-Natal Care of the Mother and Baby;
  • Feeding and Nutrition;
  • Hygiene;
  • Environment;
  • Child Care Provision;
  • Medical Needs and Childhood Illness;
  • Health and Services Personnel;
  • Physical Development;
  • Intellectual Development;
  • Emotional Development;
  • Social Development;
  • Play and Toys;
  • Special Children.

 

The coursework is an in-depth study of the development of a single

child between 0-5 years made over a period of at least six months.

The study will comprises of both research/investigation and observations.

A range of teaching styles are used to ensure that delivery of the subject meets the learning needs of all students.
