Under 12 North Tyneside League Cup Final

George Stephenson High School 4 – 0 Marden Bridge

Scorers: Job, Milne, Serginson, Hunter-Winship

GSHS were the hot favourites to win the trophy prior to this match. They had been on a great run of form, having not lost a game since November. However Marden had produced some good results themselves so they were not taken for granted. On the way to the final GSHS had seen off opponents from Monkseaton Middle, Seaton Burn and Longbenton.

The game started with GSHS quickly settling and putting Marden on the back foot. Connor Serginson and Marc Dixon dominated the key central midfield area which meant the two front runners James Job and Mark Milne were seeing a lot of the ball. From their positive start GSHS dominated the first half. In fact Steven Whitmore in the GSHS goal didn’t have to make a save. Despite the pressure Marden’s defence was not to be undone easily. With Alex Whitmore and Chris Hunter- Winship pushing on from midfield Marden worked extremely hard to limit goal scoring opportunities for GSHS. Milne and Job had a couple of half chances while Alex Whitmore saw his bullet header narrowly miss the post. Serginson and Dixon continued to ‘boss’ the midfield with some big tackles.

GSHS nearly broke the deadlock from an unlikely source late in the first half. Jonathan Forster moved upfield from his defensive position for a corner. As the ball was crossed he threw out a leg only to see his effort shave the post. As the teams came in at half time the score was still 0-0 and everything was still to play for. In the second half GSHS knew that if they kept playing football goals would come.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first. The GSHS back four of  Owen Barrett, Mark Waters, Daniel Reay and Jonathan Forster were rarely troubled. GSHS continued to play intelligently. Full backs Barrett and Waters started to see more of the ball. This helped the ‘Killy’ boys put even more pressure on Marden. Then the deadlock was broken. After some neat build up play Job pounced in the box to finish from close range. From the on Marden heads began to drop. More goals quickly followed. Skipper Serginson drove the ball home from the edge of the box to make it 2-0. Milne and Hunter-Winship capped off their performances with a goal each making the score 4-0.

All 3 substitutes were introduced for GSHS in the second half. Daniel Wiseman, Doiminic Bell and Lee Mather all looked the part as they set about Marden’s defence in style. Bell’s link up play was precise as always. Mather looked cool and composed, using the ball intelligently. Wiseman burst through from midfield with ease only to see his shot go wide.

As the game drew to a close Marden did make one last push for a goal. Everything they threw at GSHS was absorbed and dealt with by Reay and Forster. Steven Whitmore in goal was called into action but was more than a match the Marden’s front line.

A great performance and a well deserved victory for GSHS. As cup holders the challenge now is to retain the trophy next year!!

“An excellent performance from the boys. Great things are now expected from this team. In fact this could be the beginning of a dynasty………….!”
