The Last Week in Sport 23rd – 27th March 2009

 

The Year 10 football team lost 4 – 2 to Churchill. After being 2 – 0 down GSHS levelled the score with goals from Martin Scott and Ross Lester. Two late goals won the game for Churchill.

The Y9 football team won 3 – 1 against Churchill. Goals from Michael Butcher, Matthew Latimer and Josh Faulkes sealed the 3 points.

The Y8 basketball team beat Longbenton by over 30 points in a very high scoring game.

The Y11 football team lost to a very skilful Saint Thomas More team. The score was 3 – 0.

The Y10/11 rugby team took part in a festival at North Shields rugby club.

 

Week in Sport 16th – 20th March 2009

  Self defence classes have started after school every Monday. Everyone is welcome.

The classes start at 3.20 and finishes at 4.20. They are held in gym The Year 8 football team beat Longbenton 6-2 and are still unbeaten in the league.

 The Y7/8 hockey team lost to Seaton Burn 7 – 5 but played very well.

 Year 8 Young Leaders assisted with a Primary School orienteering activity. Westmoor and Bailey Green pupils spent an afternoon doing map reading work and were assisted by the GSHS pupils.

 The Y11 football team lost to Burnside 2 – 1 in a very entertaining game.

 The Y9/10 rugby team played Newcastle School for Boys and ran out convincing winners be more then 30 points.

 

Week in Sport 9th – 13th March 2009

The Year 8 basketball team played Newcastle School for Boys. In a closely fought battle they narrowly lost 12 – 10.

The Year 8 football team progressed to the semi final of the league cup after beating Valley Gardens after extra time.

 

The Y9 football team lost in the semi  final of the league cup after a penalty shoot out.

 

The Y9 basketball team played Newcastle School for Boys. They too lost narrowly, after only one point separated the two teams.

 Week in Sport 2nd – 6th March 2009

 

The Y11 football team drew 2-2 with John Spence in a closely fought encounter. Goals came from James Campbell and James Illingworth

 

The Y9 football team drew 2 – 2 with Seaton Burn. Goals came from James Job and John Coul.

 

The Y10 football team lost 2 – 0 to Seaton Burn. GSHS created a number of chances by just couldn’t do enough to score.

 

The Y7 football team won a 12 goal thriller!! They beat Valley Gardens 8-4!!! Well done to them.

 

The Y8 boys badminton team played in the North Tyneside doubles badminton festival. The ‘A’ pairing won all their games and won the overall competition. They were Steven Brown and Karl Wilson. They ‘B’ pairing won 4 matches out of 8. They were Philip Welsh and Lewis Adams.

 

The KS4 boys and girls badminton team played against Seaton Burn. In a very entertaining match GSHS lost 11-5. The girls played particularly well. They were Jessica Potts, Vicky Shaw and Sarah Burtenshaw.

 

Matthew Rayson in Y8 was nominated for a North Tyneside leadership award. At the award ceremony he finished runner up, which was a tremendous achievement. Matthew has done a lot of volunteering this year at Percy Hedley and The Lakeside Action Club.

 

The Y8 football team beat S T More 4 – 1. The team are still unbeaten in the league this year.

23rd – 27th February 2009

 

The Y8 football team won their league match against Churchill 2 – 1. The team are still unbeaten in the league.

The KS 3 boys and girls badminton team played in a festival at Tyne Met College. Although they didn’t quite manage to win their were a number of impressive displays.

 

Two new after school clubs are going to start soon at GSHS. They are both free and will be run by specialist coaches. Boxercise will start on Wednesday 4th March for 6 weeks. It will take place in gym 2 from 3.10 to 4.10.

 

Self defence will also start on Monday 16th March in gym 2, again from 3.10 – 4.10.

9th – 13th February 2009

 

The Y10/11 basketball team took part in a festival against Seaton Burn and Newcastle School for boys. The boys played very well winning one game and losing the other.

 

The Y7 football team lost their 3rd round county cup match in Prudhoe.

The boys went down 5 – 0 to a very strong Prudhoe team.

2nd - 6th February2009

 

The Y10 football team lost 2 – 0 against John Spence in their league match.

 

The Y11 B team lost 3 – 2 to Burnside. Goals were scored by Jordan Barnes and Liam Teruel.

26th – 30th January 2009

 

The Y8 girls badminton team competed at a festival at Marden Bridge Sports Centre. Although the team did not win they competed extremely well and deserve a lot of credit.

 

The Y6 hockey festival was held at The Parks. Local schools from Holystone, Westmoor, Bailey Green and Moor Edge competed. Westmoor won the ‘A’ team event, while Holystone won the ‘B’ team competition.

 

The Y8 football team drew 1-1 in their league match against John Spence. In a very entertaining game Owen Barrett scored the only goal for GSHS.

 

16 students in Y8 assisted with the running of a primary school orienteering day at The Rising Sun Country Park. The team of Young Leaders helped run a series of activities. They were congratulated for their helps by all the Primary School staff.

 

Two Y11 students attended a hockey umpiring course at Coach Lane. They were Jessica Potts and Andrew Ruddy.

19th-23rd January 2009

3 students represented the North Tyneside Cross Country team at the County Championships. They were Liam redhead (Y9), James Job (Y8) and Jessica Potts (Y11). All 3 students finished in the top 20 of their race. James finished in the top 16 and will now go on to represent the county at the inter county championships. Well done to them all.

The Y8 football team beat Burnside 6 – 0 in a league match. Goals came from Whitmore (2), Barrett, Dixon and Milne (2).

The Y7 girls football team played Longbenton in a friendly match. They won the match 5 – 3. Well Done!

 

12th-16th January 2009

 

The Y8 football team beat Marden bridge in the league. They won 3-1 with goals from Job, Dixon and help from an own goal. The team play Burnside next Thursday.

The Y7 hockey team played Seaton burn in an indoor friendly match. Although they played very well they were unlucky to lose 7-5.

Two new after school clubs started this week. On Tuesday a KS 3 basketball club started and will run every Tuesday. On Wednesday KS3 rugby club now runs. Anyone interested in coming along see a member of the PE dept for details.

A number of Y8 pupils represented the North Tyneside U13 football squad in the last 16 of the national trophy. They played Newcastle on Saturday morning. They were unfortunately beaten 2-0. 

 

5th-9th January 2009

 

The KS 4 girls badminton team played in the final of the North Tyneside festival. In a very good game against Churchill they were narrowly beaten. However, to progress this far in the festival was a fantastic effort.

 

On Saturday a number of KS 3 pupils tool part in the second swimming session as part of the paralympic screening programme.

The Last Week in Sport 15th-19th December 2008

 

On Friday a basketball competition was held in the gym at break and lunchtime to raise money for Tiny Lives. Students paid 50p to get 3 shots at the basket from varying distances. There was a point scoring system for each successful shot. A cash prize was available to the students who got the highest score. This was won by Trevor Dakin in Y11.

 

 

 8th – 12th December 2008

The Y9 football team played their County Cup match away against Hexham. After a close fought game GSHS eventually lost 1 – 0. However, on another day it could have been a different story.

Y11 boys entered two teams in the Tyne Met 5 aside football festival at JJB. Both teams performed well and enjoyed the afternoon.

 

 

1st –5th December 2008

 

16 students competed in the North Tyneside cross country championship at Churchill. 3 students finished in the top 16 to qualify to represent the North Tyneside at the County event in January. They were Jessica Potts (9th), Liam Redhead (8th) and James Job (4th).

 

The Y7 girls entered two football teams in the JJB 5 aside festival on Wednesday. Both teams did very well with one of them finishing second.

 

The Y8 JJB 5 aside event had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions making travelling too dangerous.

 

The Y9 JJB event went ahead on Friday with GSHS entering a boys and a girls event. Both teams competed very well and enjoyed their afternoon out. 3 year 10 boys refereed at the event as part of the Young Apprentice Programme. They were Steven Job, Louis Frankland and Brent Stewart.

 

On Saturday 6 students competed in the Tyne and Wear Trampolining event in South Shields. They were Sam Monaghan (Y9), Rachel Nichol (Y8), Beth Nichol (Y8), Holly Green (Y8), Martin Ramsay (Y11) and Jessica Potts (Y11).

 

24th – 28th November 2008

 

The Y8 football team were knocked out of the County Cup Quarter Final after losing to Burnside 3-1 (AET). The score was 1-1 at the end of 60 minutes. Unfortunately Burnside were too strong for GSHS in extra time.

 

6 Y8 footballers played for North Tyneside FA in the All England Cup. They travelled to Liverpool and won 4-1. The GSHS representatives were Steven Whitmore, Alex Whitmore, Marc Dixon, Jonathan Forster, Connor Serginson and Mark Milne.

 

Key Stage 3 and 4 students competed in a badminton festival at John Spence. Badminton continues to grow at GSHS. There are lunchtime clubs as well as two after school clubs on a Thursday.

 

 17th – 21st November 2008

 

The Y7 football team progressed to the quarter final of the league cup beating Marden Bridge Middle school on penalties.

A number of Y7/8 pupils took part in the North Tyneside Indoor athletics at The Parks, North Shields.  We are waiting for the final results. If students qualify they will represent north Tyneside at the Tyne and Wear Youth Games.

Sixteen KS3 students went to The Parks to watch the U19 badminton international competition. The competition was between the Home nations and Sweden. GSHS spent the morning watching the talented players.

 

10th – 14th November 2008

 

The Year 8 football team progressed to the quarter final of the County Cup by beating S T More 3 – 1. Goals came from James Job (2), Mark Milne and Chris Hunter-Winship.

 

A number of 6th form students passed their football level 1 coaching badge. The students had been working hard on their theory for several weeks. 3 students passed their final assessment. They were Nathan Collins, Daniel Knight and Martin Athkin. Two Y11 students are also waiting for take their final assessment as they won’t be 16 until next year. They are Michael Race and Anthony Dixon.

 

Martin Ramsay (Y11) represented North Tyneside at the regional trampolining competition at Sunderland.

3rd – 7th November 2008

The Year 8 football team played Rothbury Middle School in the 1st Round of The County Cup. They won comfortably 7-1 and now play S. T. More in the next round.

 

5 Year 8 boys represented North Tyneside FA on Saturday morning. They played in a game against Darlington. North Tyneside dominated large parts of the game but were beaten 2-1.

 

A group of students took part in the North Tyneside Trampolining competition at John Spence. They were Naomi Ruffles, Holy Green, Beth Nicol and Rachel Nicol (Y8), Annabel Lee, Sam Monaghan (Y9), Jessica Potts and Martin Ramsay (Y11). Martin won his age group and now goes on to represent North Tyneside at the regional event in Sunderland on Saturday 15th November.

 

The Y7 and 8 netball teams played a friendly against Seaton Burn. The Y7 girls won their match, while the Y8 girls narrowly lost theirs. Both teams played extremely well.

30th June to 4th July

 

10 Junior Sports Leaders assisted the running of Moor Edge Sports day. Each leader led and managed a team in a range of sporting activities.

 

12 Young Sports Leaders assisted in the running of Backworth sports day.

 

Another 10 Sports Leaders assisted with the running of The Festival of Sport for Primary schools. 12 schools participated in the event and with the help of the leaders made the event a huge success.

 

The PE department would like to congratulate all the superb help given by the Sports Leaders this week. They have worked extremely hard and done themselves proud – Well Done!

 

Y10 had an inter form football competition over 2 lunchtimes.

 

23rd June to 27th June

 

Two girls finished runners up in the North Tyneside tennis festival. Congratulations goes to Emily Rutherford (Y9) and Holly Green (Y7).

 

 A group of Y10 Sports Leaders helped with the running of the Tri golf festival at The Lakeside.

 

The Y7 Young Leaders excelled themselves on another trail day at The Rising Sun Country Park. They worked with children from a local Primary school for the day as well as leading activities with some staff from Churchill Community College.

 

Y9 had an inter form football competition over 2 lunchtimes. After a close fiunal 9MA eventually won.

 

16th June to 20th June

 

A Y5/6 Rounders, cricket and softball festival was held at GSHS. Around 150 pupils from local Primary schools took part in the sports afternoon.

 

A number of Y7/8 athletes took part in a track and field competition at Monkton Stadium. They had already qualified from a previous meeting at Longbenton. At Monkton 2 students qualified for the next stage which is the County Championship at Gateshead Stadium. They were Danielle Hedley (Y8 – Shot Putt) and Stacey Cooper (Y8- Javelin). Well done to both of them.

Monday 9th June – Friday 13th June

 

Athletics

6 students are representing North Tyneside at the county athletics event on Saturday 13th June. They qualified through from the first round at Monkton.

They are Vicky Shaw (Y10 – Discus), Jessica Potts (Y10 – 1500m), James Balmer (Y10 – Discus), Steven Job (Y9 High Jump), Martin Scott (Y9 – High jump), Andrew Toothill (Y12 – Discus).

 

35 Y7/8 students competed in the Longbenton and District athletics on Tuesday. 8 students qualified through to the North Tyneside competition next Tuesday (17th June) at Monkton. They are Gemma Robinson (Y7 – High Jump), Lea Robinson (Y7 - 800m), Alex Whitmore (Y7 – 800m), Steven Whitmore (Y7 – 200m), Alyx Scott (Y8- 200m), Danielle Hedley (Y8 – Shot Putt), Sarah Main (Y8 – Shott Putt), S. Cooper (Y8 – Javelin).

 

Awards

Ashleigh Rutherford (Y9) has been awarded the title of Young Female Achiever of the Year for disability sport. She received the award at a high profile event in Durham on Tuesday.

 

 Monday 2nd June- Friday 6th June

 

Congratulations to Emily Rutherford in Y8! She has been selected to play tennis for the county team. Emily is ranked 4th in the county.

 

Congratulations also to Natasha Wilson. She is the regional Karate champion. Natasha is competing on 21st June in Barnsley at the national qualifiers event.

 

A group of Y9 and 10 students competed in the North Tyneside athletics at Monkton on Tuesday. A number of students progressed through to represent North Tyneside at the County Championship in a couple of weeks. We are waiting for the official results. Names will be posted on the website when we get them.

 

Westmoor, Amberley and Bailey Green competed in the Y5/6 Longbenton and district athletics on Thursday.

 

Steve Sharp (Badminton Development Coach) spent some working with Y10 students at the Lakeside Centre during their PE lessons. He was involved in coaching 6 lessons over a 2 day period. Students have picked up some new skills as well as developing their interest in badminton. Steve was also impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment that the students showed on the day – Well done to them!

 

Monday 19th May to Friday 23rd May 2008

 

Year 8 boys and girls played Saint Thomas More at tennis. In a very competitive match GSHS eventually lost 17 – 11.

 

The Year 7 boys also played Saint Thomas More in cricket. Again the game was very entertaining and competitive with the boys losing by 6 runs.

 

A group of 16 pupils from Year 7 spent a day at the Rising Sun Country Park. The Young Leaders worked with a local Primary School for the day, where they lead team building activities. All the pupils were excellent ambassadors for the school.

 

A group of Year 9 and 10 pupils assisted with the running of Westmoor Primary sports day. The junior sports leaders led activities and events at the school. Again they were a credit to themselves and their school.

 

Two cricket teams from Year 7/8 entered the North Tyneside cricket festival in Tynemouth. The all day event was extremely successful as all pupils were able to play competitive cricket and improve their skills.

 

A team of kick boxers entered the North Tyneside kickboxing festival. The pupils from Y7, 8 and 10 entered the festival following 8 kickboxing lessons from specialist coach Kerri Temple. The festival involved no direct competition from pupils, it was judged on how well pupils were able to demonstrate their skills.

 

Monday 12th May – Friday 16th May 2008

 

Cricket

Year 10 and 11 boys played Seaton Burn at Backworth Cricket Club. The lads played extremely well but were beaten in the end.

 

Festival of Sport

The festival took place at Temple Park. Schools from all round the region sent students to compete in a fun day of sport. 5 Year 9 girls took part.

 

Tennis

Leanne Illingworth and Alice Rutherford finished second in the Year 11 North Tyneside tennis tournament.

 

Kielder Challenge

A group of Key Stage 3 students went to Carlisle to compete in the second round of the Kielder Challenge. This was a follow on to their success several weeks ago in the first round at The Rising Sun Country Park.

 

Football

The Year 7 B team played a friendly against Seaton Burn (A team). They lost 4-0 but put in a very workman like performance that they all should be proud off. The Year 7 A team attended a presentation at The Village Hotel where they collected the North Tyneside league and cup trophies that they won. 5 of the squad also collected certificates for representing North Tyneside this season.

 

Coaching Courses

Anyone interested (Y11,12 and 13) in doing their FA Level 1 coaching badge please see a member of the PE department for more details. A course is running soon at GSHS. It is free of charge.

Clubs

Clubs are running at present for athletics, tennis, rounders, cricket and kickboxing. See a member of the PE staff for more details.
